Tribunal sacks Kano Rep over certificate forgery
The Kano State National and State House of Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal recently made a significant ruling concerning the representation of Tarauni Federal Constituency in Kano State’s House of Representatives.
Following the National Assembly election that took place on February 25, a decision was reached regarding the validity of Muktar Yerima’s election. Yerima had participated in the election under the banner of the New Nigeria People’s party.
However, the tribunal determined that Yerima’s election should be nullified due to the discovery of certificate forgery. Consequently, the tribunal announced Hafizu Kawu, the candidate from the All Progressives Congress, as the rightful victor of the poll. The tribunal, consisting of a three-member panel led by Justice I.P. Chima, arrived at this conclusion while delivering judgment on a petition presented by Kawu.
The petition aimed to contest Yerima’s recognition as the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
In light of the proven forgery of Yerima’s certificate, the tribunal emphasized that all votes amassed by Yerma during the poll should be deemed invalid and treated as wasted votes.
